After 7 weeks, we finally have a movie opening bigger than $30 million. In fact, Saw II had the best per screen average of any number 1 film since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory over three months ago. Saw II also became the 15th biggest debut of the year, the 5th biggest October opener ever, while everything else new was a massive disappointment.
Including Zorro II, check out what happened this year to all the films that opened on around 3500 screens - the 2005 films all scraped the bottom of the barrel. Before 2005, the average opening of that size was $48.1 million. Now, it's $36.8 million. Let me put it a different way: thanks to this year's awful openings, Daredevil is now above the average for a debut that size.
