I know I'm about 35 movie reviews behind, and I don't see as many films as I used to, but I saw a fantastic movie last week on vacation: Little Miss Sunshine.
Jeffrey Wells calls it this year's Sideways, but I think it's much closer to Flirting With Disaster (still the best Ben Stiller movie ever made), as Sunshine takes a disfunctional family on a road trip to bring their 7 year old little girl to a beauty pageant.
Somehow, it manages to simultaneously avoid and revel in all the clichés of this genre, and manages to be absolutely hysterical, touching, personal, and just mind-blowingly great. Plus, Steve Carell shows that he can be hilarious in a character which is a 180 degree turn from what we've seen him do in the past.
The audience I was with in Chicago applauded at the end... go see it. Here's the NY Times review also.
