Regular readers know that I'm a gigantic fan of Entourage, but this season has been truly abysmal. This week's Yom Kippur episode was the first one worth watching this entire year. I have a theory, however, and it's not because of Ari or Carla Gugino. It's because no time was spent focusing on Vince's career. To me, those were the magic moments - would they get the Ramones deal done? How much would Aquaman make on opening weekend? How would Warner Bros. respond to Vince playing hardball for Aquaman 2? Can they restructure schedules so that Vince can do both Queens Boulevard and Medellin? What would James Cameron think of Queens Boulevard at Sundance? Sure, it's a comedy, but these are the dramatic moments that bring a heightened sense of tension to their lives and relationships.
Do I really care whether Vince sleeps with his agent? Or whether Eric and Simone are having a fight? Turtle and Drama always have their "wacky antics and hijinks" but that's balanced with the business of making Vince a star. Up to this week, until Benicio del Toro dropped out of Medellin and everyone was racing to a deadline, even Vince, Ari, and Eric were almost doing their own versions of the Turtle/Drama thing, and I couldn't have cared less. Balance is the key, and the first few episodes swung the pendulum waaaay to the left.
Maybe this week's episode is a good sign...
I totally agree with you Craig. Great show, but this season has been sub-par at best. This last weeks ep was a step in the right direction, but the show still has a long way to go quickly before it matches the "aquaman" era.
